JAY (Designer / Gardener)
Jay founded Jay Gardens in 2004 and has cultivated it into a versatile, eco-green company specializing in the creation and maintenance of both eye-catching flowering gardens and tranquil urban oases; verdant eco-lawns; and productive kitchen gardens.
Jay’s earliest gardening memory goes back to burying fish heads with his mother in their family vegetable garden and marveling at how plants grew from the fertilized soil. His passion for gardening grew over the years, and decades later, Jay is still getting his hands dirty designing and caring for gardens all across the city (and yes, still helping his mom with her garden). He also keeps a weekend garden in Turners Falls, Massachusetts.
In 2014, Jay was brought on as Head Gardener at the Voelker Orth Bird Sanctuary and Victorian Gardens in Flushing Queens, where he is modernizing the overall design of the garden while retaining the Victorian feel of this home, built in 1891.
His other interests include traditional healthy eating (based on the research of Dr. Weston A. Price), photography, birds, travel, and spending time with his partner and their two sons.
SCOTT (Gardener / Carpenter)
Scott joined the Jay Gardens team in the spring of 2014 after graduating from SUNY Oneonta with a degree in Environmental Engineering. Scott has a special interest is sustainable gardening and eco-friendly lawns as well as composting and recycling. He's a jack-of-all-trades, and is equally comfortable wielding the mighty circular saw to build modern cedar planters as he is planting a delicate pansy.
RED (Tree Maintenance / Gardener)
Red is a NYC tree climber and pruner certified by the Brooklyn Botanical Garden and Trees New York, She is studying Sustainable Landscape Design and Arboriculture at the New York Botanical Garden and is a committed green-crusader who spends her extra time keeping the street trees in her Crown Height’s community healthy and looking their best.
